Yvonne has found a new purpose in life since moving into Estia Health Benalla.
She first arrived in February as a respite resident when she needs some extra support. However, after spending several weeks in the home, she was ready to make the move permanent.
Estia Health Benalla’s activity coordinator Michelle said since coming into care Yvonne has become the homes unofficial mascot.
"She takes part in almost all actives on offer and volunteers every chance she has", Michelle said. "She is very supportive of others and always stays for all competitions, even if she’s not taking part herself, just to cheer on other residents”.
Yvonne made her own decision to go into care and said it was a decision she was very happy with. “The staff here are very lovely and caring", Yvonne said.
“They go above and beyond to help you”. Yvonne has always had a deep passion for helping others and in her younger years took charge of a Papua New Guinea hospital, teaching and mentoring local nurses.
Now in need of care herself Yvonne has one again found her sense of purpose and fulfils her desire to contribute by running a bible study group at Estia Health offering support to other residents. "She is very caring towards all employees and residents", Michelle said.
“If she sees someone feeling down, she will take them for a stroll and a lovely chat”
To anyone needing help who may feed unsure about residential aged care Yvonne offers the advice. “Give it a go", she said. “See what you think. You might be pleasantly surprised”.
